We often have clients that come to us and say that they want to be number 1 in Google’s organic search results and while this can occur overtime, it takes quite a bit of manpower and work to get your site ranking well for multiple keywords.
There is no real secret for getting the top results in Google or Bing apart from working hard to get there in the first place and then maintaining it.
Google has brought out a few changes over the past years regarding the way it views and categorises your website. It is always important to keep on top of these changes to ensure your search engine position is not affected.
You need to be picky about choosing your keywords. Long tail keywords can get you some very good results as apposed to spending all your energy on a keyword that is widely chased with many competitors. If you are a Florist and want to have people find you in search results, think about the amount of competitors you have, if location is important and what your audience may be searching for and develop content to assist getting there.
It may be difficult to rank for the word “Florist” due to competition and other companies big budget SEO but do not lose hope in gaining traffic from other keywords like “Florist in Surfers Paradise” or “Long Stem Roses in Surfers Paradise”. These people are searching for specifics and now that search engines like Google are more intuitive, you have a good chance, with good SEO and keywords of getting in front of them in the results. Have a look at what your competitors are doing and better that.
Writing a blog post is considered to be one of the best ways for you to grow your search result position but you have to consider that humans are the ones reading your website and buying your product or service, not the search robot. Write for your target market and what they would be looking for.
If you focus all your time on the perfecting your blog posts so that you get the coveted top number one spot on Google’s search result then you may be missing your audience. We all search for an answer to a problem and if we start reading an article that seems disjointed and more about keyword stuffing with no real point, then the person leaves your website. You want them to stay as long as possible so that they may turn into a buying customer.
We tell clients to avoid having websites where it is almost impossible for themselves to update the content. Your words matter so being able to create posts and update your products can be very effective and affordable. Using a Content Management System like WordPress allows its user to manage each page well after the site has been built.
But you again need to be careful and read up on how to correctly setup pages, keywords and Meta data. You can do more harm by throwing together a few pages, slamming in a heap of words and hoping that the traffic will come rolling in. Take the time to develop a strategy and even use a template to create content and tick off the things that need to happen before you hit publish. Failing to follow best practise steps may see your products entered into the wrong category, site ranking low or even ranking for the incorrect words. Do not use companies that say as a definite that they can get you to number one with very little effort. Your site will be caught out and possibly be penalised or even worse, banned.
Getting to the top of the organic results in Google can be achieved but you need to be realistic with what your are trying to accomplish. Write content that is appealing to your target audience and write it in a way that will both showcase your service and hit the mark in search.
